What is Targeted Intervention?
Targeted intervention is a proven teaching strategy that supports individuals to receive instruction tailored to their areas of need. At Union Colony Elementary School, our team of teachers assess students to find out what students excel at and where they could use a little extra support. If a student is found to be performing below grade level in math or reading, the teacher will schedule a block of time for the student to receive extra instruction targeted directly to the area of need.
Our skilled teachers use data to help narrow down the specific needs for a student. Interventions can be done for a host of skills from phonics to comprehension and addition to geometry. During targeted intervention, students may work 1:1 with a classroom or specialist teacher or in a small group of students who need to work on similar skills.
How Does Targeted Intervention Help My Student?
Personalized instruction is highly effective. Union Colony Elementary School teachers use data from assessments to pinpoint specific areas that students can improve or expand upon. As soon as the skills are mastered, students “graduate out of” intervention time. Since every student is unique in their needs and learning approach, we’ve found targeted intervention to be more successful than whole group strategies.
