5 Tips to Prepare for Back-to-School with UCS

Middle and high school students at Union Colony Preparatory School move through the hallways during a passing period. There are blue lockers and bulletin boards in the hallway.

Union Colony Schools(UCS) is thrilled to be opening our doors to students for the 2023-24 school year! We can’t wait to see our students back at school, pushing themselves to be their best, gaining new skills, and finding joy in being together with teachers and friends again. Our tuition-free K-12 schools have a wonderful year of learning and fun planned!

Don’t forget that UCS staggers the grade level start dates for a successful start:

August 8th: 6th grade

August 9th: 1st-5th and 7th-8th

August 10th: 9th-12th

August 14th: Kindergarten

Many parents express worry over the transition from a less structured, wake-at-any-time summer to the more disciplined schedule of the school year. You’re not alone if you are beginning to wonder how you will make it out the door on time for work and school without forgetting anything. Now is a good time to get ready for the new school year with our top 5 tips to prepare for back-to-school.

1. Talk together.  Discuss everyone’s hopes for the school year as well as any possible concerns or fears. If this is your child’s first year at UCS, assure your child that they will be safe and welcome here—and they will have fun!

2. Gradually switch to your school year sleep schedule now. Peaceful slumber makes for peaceful mornings. You can support your child’s brain power by starting to push up bedtime by a few minutes each night to prepare for an earlier wake-up call.

3. Create a Launch Pad & prep the night before. Consider a box or designated area as a launch pad for each child in your family. The launch pad is where they will put everything they need for the next day. You could add a photo of the items or a written list to remind your child what they need. 4. Attend an Open House. Union Colony is holding an open house for our 1st through 5th grade families on August 7th from 4:00 - 8:00 pm. Come meet your teachers and get acquainted with the school building.

5. Practice now is freedom later. If we practice the routines we need for each day, we build productive habits. Our brains are then free to focus on learning and building relationships at school!
